05 Oct Acupuncture for muscle spasm
In Western acupuncture there is a long tradition in treating muscle spasms and cramps. These are often called trigger points. These are blockages in the muscle that are painful when touched. Acupuncture works by unblocking the body’s trapped energy (in Chinese medicine this is called Qi) through the body’s systems.
The modern scientific explanation is when needling the trigger points this stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain including endorphins, encephalins and other types of neurochemicals.
These natural chemicals trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones and alter the pain experience. The improved energy and biochemical balance results in stimulating the body to release muscle tension and bring about pain relief.
If you have muscle spasms (‘knots’) in your muscles, particularly the low back shoulders and neck, why not try some acupuncture alongside Osteopathy for fast and often highly effective relief of those muscular trigger points.
